Last week we got to celebrate Grandma Rodgers' 90th birthday with her and Grandpa (just a little late). We brought angel food cake, some cool whip, and raspberries- a treat she made for me many times as a child- (only with fresh berries from her garden.) Every time I see raspberries they make me think of her and Grandpa and the raspberry patch they had in their garden for so many years. I remember how even the sting of a thorn didn't hurt enough to discourage me from harvesting the sweet berries they grew. We lit a candle and sang to her- and I could tell she felt as special as I did when I was with her as a child.
As we sang, she looked around the table at her great grandchildren, smiling the warm smile I have come to know and love. She gently laughed her all familiar deep giggle signaling genuine happiness. I have such fond memories of the times have I spent with her and Grandpa in my comparatively short 38 years. I only hope I can make it to 90 myself.
