confessions of an overreactor

The winter blues have taken a toll on me this year.  The monotonous cold... the three feet of snow... the lack of sun.  For some reason it has affected me worse this year.  I am not proud of how I let it take a hold of me and take over.  I know I have been less than patient especially with my family.  I know I have struggled to get through some days, just feeling so blah and apathetic.
And now I know- because I have seen first hand- how my attitude has affected one of my children.

The other night I heard the pitter patter of little feet down the steps, well after bed time.  Cassidy is the notorious offender, but she is just so darn cute and innocent I usually just give her a hug and kiss, and pat her bottom as she skips back upstairs.  But this night was a little different.

When she approached me I could see her eyes were red, her hair was mussed and bangs wet, and I could see the distress in her face. But couldn't determine exactly what was up.  She was having a hard time telling me.  I started getting upset at her because she wouldn't speak.  Andy stepped in, questioning my harsh tone and gave me the cold hard reality check I needed (and have needed too many times over the past month or so).  I calmed down and asked her again what was wrong.  She couldn't verbalize it.  I asked why her hair was wet, and her bottom lip got big and pouty and she told me 'I tried to fix it, but it wouldn't come out... even when I sprayed it and brushed it... so then I got the scissors.'

It took me a minute to calm myself when I realized the 'mussed' hair was because a chunk was missing. Andy stepped in again, calmed her and we put her to bed together. We had a short talk about how that wouldn't happen again, and that she wasn't in trouble, that we were a little disappointed that she didn't come get us first.

I went down stairs and started processing the incident.  Feeling bad about how I reacted, because my overreactions were obviously getting out of control.

And as I sat there it dawned on me.

SHE CUT HER HAIR BECAUSE OF ME.

About a week before this incident we were short on time, and I was busily trying to get something done, when she came to me with a huge twirly knot in her hair.  When she is bored or nervous or tired, she twirls a front section of her hair over and over...  This usually ends up in a knot.  On that particular occasion, the knot was super tight and I was having a hard time getting out a knot that I had no time to get out.  So I gave her an earful.

My heart sank.  She cut her hair to avoid upsetting me; to avoid getting yelled at again; so that she could do it by herself without having to disappoint or involve me, so instead I could be proud that she handled it herself.  It seemed like a good solution to her until she realized what she had actually done while trying to avoid upsetting me was perhaps worse.  And now she had to tell me.

I know had I not overreacted last time she had a knot, that she would have just come down, asked for help and I would have taken 20 seconds to help her remove her twirly knot. *sighhhhhhhhh

I felt so ashamed of myself.  What kind of mother frightens her children into feeling that they can't come to her when something is wrong?  I have gone over it in my head time and again, and I have vowed that this will never happen again.  I am taking steps to make myself better... to soften this hardened heart and spirit. I am praying more and taking time to consciously compliment my children.  I am doing all I can to be positive and to love.  I am trying really hard not to yell, and to take each situation a step at a time. They are my babies!  They deserve so much better.

Sometimes it takes something like this for our eyes to be opened.  Blessing in disguise.  I am just so thankful that it was only a chunk of hair, and not something more serious.  The message was received, and I am thankful that I don't have to be perfect, as long as I continue to try to be better. Thankful that I can pick up, move on, and do all that I can to make sure I keep myself from becoming that person again.

Just a few more favorite shots I have taken lately.

Isaac looked so cute in his footie pajamas as he was eating his teddy grahams the other day, I couldn't resist snapping a few shots.  I like to play around with depth of field and lighting. He has been a better sport lately, cooperating for me♥.  Although the light source is artificial (not my preference), there is something about the 'feel' of these shots that I love.  Not as crisp and vibrant as I typically strive for, but the graininess just fits here.  I feel like I am continually trying new techniques and tweaking my style.  I guess these are just another step in the evolution of my photography.

differing depth of field... can't decide which I love more, but these just scream 'small' and 'innocent' to me

just because it keeps snowing...

however from the looks of this wimpy snowbank, I took these pics before the last few storms...

The kids and I recently took our annual February road trip to Milwaukee to visit Jenny, Matt and the kids. And while Andy praises me for providing the second best Valentine's gift ever (a bachelor's weekend- we all know what #1 would be...) Matt graciously welcomes four more kids into his home for a long weekend of supercharged kid chaos.

We started off our visit with a trip to the Milwaukee Public Museum. It has been 4 years since we have been there!  When Andy was in Dental School we lived only blocks away and back then every Monday was free admission for Milwaukee County Residents.  So in the winter when we couldn't get outside, I would take the kids practically every Monday. No Joke. Jack just loved it. In fact, here is a picture of him at the butterfly exhibit when he was only 3, below!
Here is Jack when he is only 3 at the butterfly exhibit!
I was curious to see how much they would remember.  Isaac obviously didn't remember anything, as this was his first time there.  He loved the butterflies and attempted to get them to land on him but wasn't ready to hold any when I tried to give home one.  He was, however more brave than Lucy was! When we got to the dinosaur exhibit he held on for dear life around my neck and middle, and repeated "Keep walking Mommy! Keep walking Mommy! Keep walking Mommy!"  I think the overall darkness of many of the museum exhibits was unsettling for him. But he still loved being with his cousins.

Lucy and Cassidy really didn't remember much because they were only 1 and 3 years old back then.  Jack remembered everything.  He was less than a fan of the dinosaur exhibit than I remember, however.  He used to really like it... but was pretty freaked out this time.  He loved the bug exhibits, the Streets of old Milwaukee, the Eskimo/igloo exhibit and the rain forest exhibit.

one of my favorite exhibits as a kid! the gems!
So I took this image of the kids entering the dinosaur exhibit, unaware of what I was capturing.  You can see through Jack's expression, how just about all the kids felt entering the dinosaur area.

Cass, Carter, Lucy and Elaina relished in sleep overs each night, while Jack got to stay up a little later to watch movies... a treat he rarely enjoys at home.  They (Jack would probably prefer that I clarify that he is  not included in 'they') spent a good amount of time watching Frozen YouTube videos in various languages, belting out the songs as they happily re-enacted scenes from the movie.  (And I am pretty sure that Cass and Elaina could, this very moment, sing Let it Go in Korean.) We indulged in Mexican food, Cousin's subs, caught up on a little American Pickers and Pawn Stars, made a quick stop at the mall and spent a good 2 hours inside of Target (and I could have spent like 10 more!). It is so nice to spend time with Jenny.  She and I have our own special language and dialect (that started in 1985 or so around the Hot Springs out west) and I can relax and be a goof with her as much as I want. We just get each other.

Brady and Isaac were just a blast to observe.  They had endless energy, running around getting into mischief together.  They were always laughing and egging each other on. Jenny and I had many happy moments together watching them and eaves dropping on their semi-jibber jabber, semi-English conversations, and laughing.

And as soon as it all began, it seemed it was time to pack up and go home.
Goodbyes are always so difficult.
Elaina had school that Monday, so we gave her a nice send off. Lucy and Cassidy went with Aunt Jenny to drop her off at school.
About an hour and a half later, the telephone rang.  Sweet Lane was in tears as she told her cousins good bye one more time ♥
Fun trips always seem to go so fast.  When we are with the ones we love, it is such a blessing.  We sure do love our cousins.
